Daniel “DC” Calderon is Senior Editor for U.S. Latin Music on Spotify’s North America Editorial team, where he helps shape the platform’s editorial offering for U.S. Latin audiences, with a focus on Música Mexicana and urbano and on how that music connects with listeners’ lives and culture in the U.S. Born and raised in Los Angeles, DC brings a bicultural point of view to his work and a personal connection to the audience he serves. He’s part of that audience himself.
DC joined Spotify in 2021 to help reshape its Música Mexicana offering, starting with the rebrand of Los Que Mandan, one of the platform’s flagship playlists for the genre. He was also part of the team behind La Tierra del Corrido and La Tierra de Música Mexicana, Spotify’s first Música Mexicana events in the U.S.
Beyond programming, DC represents U.S. Latin culture in conversations, events, and initiatives across Spotify’s broader music team. He DJed Spotify’s Bad Bunny celebration in Mexico City, which honored the artist’s third straight year as the platform’s most-streamed artist globally. He also highlights new music on camera through New Music Friday Features and other Spotify video series, including Editors’ Picks: Best of the Month.
His path into music began with playing drums and making beats in high school. After trade school, he worked as an audio engineer. Once in the industry, he found many other ways to work in music and went on to explore radio, DJing, and music technology. His work helping build an internet radio platform led to TuneIn, where he was Head of Latin Music Programming from 2017 to 2020. He has also worked with Beatsource, a streaming service for DJs, and in radio with iHeartRadio and SiriusXM, and he has DJed on Los Angeles radio and in clubs.
DC works closely with Spotify’s Mexico and Latin America teams. He sees music as having no borders: he introduces artists from across the region to U.S. listeners and helps U.S.-based artists reach audiences abroad. His work stays rooted in representing the U.S. Latin audience and making sure the community he comes from shows up in the music, programming, and experiences he helps shape.
